Wet glasses leave behind white rings. Daily use wears away the finish on the edges of tables and chairs. And then there are all the little scratches, dents, and divots that mysteriously appear on wood surfaces. Don't despair.

This kind of superficial damage can be fixed quickly and easily without harming your furniture or your wallet. (If you have a fine piece of antique furniture, you may want to leave repair to a professional restorer.)

These easy repair techniques will work on any clear finish — lacquer, varnish, polyurethane, or shellac. You'll find the few materials you'll need, such as denatured alcohol, wax sticks, and touch-up markers, in the paint and finishes aisle at most home-improvement stores. Look for scratch-cover polish in the cleaning-supplies section. Before tackling any repairs, clean the furniture thoroughly with a solution of dishwashing liquid or Murphy Oil Soap and water to remove all wax, grease, oil, or polish. Once you've cleaned the piece, make repairs in this order: white water rings first, followed by minor surface scratches, deep scratches, and then dings and nicks. After that, all you need do to keep a finish looking its best is to dust with a damp cloth, wipe up spills as soon as possible, and occasionally clean off any grease and dirt with mild dishwashing soap and water.

Stains, Chips, and Scratches

Water Stains
White rings, caused when water vapor penetrates into a finish, can be removed by wiping them gently with a cloth barely dampened with denatured alcohol. (Black rings indicate damaged wood and require complete removal of the surrounding finish before any repair can be attempted.) Too much alcohol can dull the finish. If that happens, restore a satin sheen by rubbing with extra-fine 0000 steel wool and paste wax. To bring back a gloss finish, use auto polishing compound applied with a rag. To make the repair blend in, go over the damaged area and the entire adjacent surface.

Shallow Chips
Where a clear finish is chipped but the underlying color is intact, fill the ding with a few drops of clear nail polish. After the polish dries, sand flush with 600-grit sandpaper. To restore the sheen on satin finishes, rub with 0000 steel wool and paste wax; for gloss finishes, use auto polishing compound and a rag.

Large Scratches and Worn Edges
Felt-tip touch-up markers come in a variety of wood tones to match common furniture finishes. Use them to color large scratches or edges where the stain has worn away. Apply only to damaged areas, and wipe immediately if any gets on the neighboring finish.

Apply a coat of paste wax over the repair and the entire adjacent surface to impart an even sheen.
By: Michael Dresdner

Non-toxic Cleaning Recipes

Here's a few of my favorite recipes. Follow the recipe or experiment a little with the ingredients to make your own!

All-Purpose Cleaner
suggested uses: hard surfaces like countertops and kitchen floors, windows and mirrors

2 cups white distilled vinegar
2 cups water
20-30 or more drops of essential oil (optional)

Tip: Warming in microwave until barely hot will boost cleaning power for tough jobs. Only microwave in a glass container.

Creamy Soft Scrub
suggested uses: Use this creamy soft scrub on kitchen counters, stoves, bathroom sinks, etc.

2 cups baking soda
½ cup liquid castile soap*
4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin (acts as a preservative)
5 drops antibacterial essential oil such as lavender, tea tree, rosemary or any scent you prefer (optional)

Mix together and store in a sealed glass jar, shelf life of 2 years.

Tips: For exceptionally tough jobs spray with vinegar first—full strength or diluted, scented—let sit and follow with scrub.

Dry soft scrubs can be made with baking soda or salt (or combination of both) with 10-15 drops essential oil to scent

*WVE recommends using a liquid castile soap that does not contain sodium lauryl (laureth) sulfate (SLS) or Diethanolamine (DEA), which may have harmful side effects.

Furniture Polish
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup white distilled vinegar
20-30 drops lemon essential oil

Shake well before using
(2 teaspoons lemon juice may be substituted for lemon oil but then must be stored in refrigerator)

Dip a clean, dry cloth into the polish and rub wood in the direction of the grain. Use a soft brush to work the polish into corners or tight places.

Tips: To remove water spots rub well with toothpaste. To remove scratches use 1 part lemon juice and 1 part oil, rub with soft cloth.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Option 1

Sprinkle toilet bowl with baking soda, drizzle with vinegar, let soak for at least 30 minutes and scrub with toilet brush.

Option 2

Put ¼ cup borax in toilet bowl and let sit for at least 30 minutes. Swish with a toilet brush and then scrub. A few drops of pine oil can be added for increased disinfecting. (Note: some people are allergic to pine oil.)

Tip: Let ingredients soak for a while to make for easy scrubbing, especially on persistent stains like toilet bowl rings

Drain Opener

½ cup baking soda
½ cup vinegar

Pour baking soda down the drain and follow with vinegar. Cover and let sit for at least 30 minutes. Flush with boiling water.

Tip: Prevent your shower from clogging by using a drain trap to catch hairs.

Laundry Detergent

1 cup soap flakes
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup Borax

Soap flakes can be made by grating your favorite pure vegetable soap with a cheese grater. Mix ingredients together and store in a glass container. Use 1 tablespoon per load (2 for heavily soiled laundry), wash in warm or cold water.

This standard recipe can be adjusted for soft water by using 1 cup soap flakes, 1/4 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup borax. For hard water, use 1 cup soap flakes, 1 cup washing soda, and 1 cup borax.

Note: Borax should not be ingested.

Tips: Add 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar to rinse as a fabric softener. For a whitener, use hydrogen peroxide rather than bleach. Soak your dingy white clothes for 30 minutes in the washer with 1/2 cup 20% peroxide. Launder as usual.

North Carolina Facts and Trivia

The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill is the oldest State University in the United States.

In 1903 the Wright Brothers made the first successful powered flight by man at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk. It's loved because of its durability and when properly maintained, will last four or five times longer than fabric or man-made fibers. But it can be a bit more tricky when it come to care and cleaning.
There are three basic types of leather and each require a different care processes. These types of leather are:

Aniline - Also known as natural, pure, naked or unprotected leather.
Semi-Aniline - Also known as finished, everyday, pigmented and painted leather.
Nubuck - Also known as chaps, distressed, bomber and suede leather.

Because each type require a different method of cleaning, I think that it is best that you follow the manufactures recommended cleaning process. Don't be afraid to call the manufacture or retail store were it was sold.

What I can suggest is some basic every day care tips.

My first tip is to dust weekly with a dry microfiber cloth.

My next tip is to vacuum your leather upholstery using the dust-brush tool attachment on your vacuum. At least once every two weeks. Doing so will remove the abrasive soil and prevent the dust from setting deeper.

Here's another tip, flip and fluff your cushions. Doing so will spread out the wear and keep wrinkles to a minimum makeing your leather furniture last much longer. Flip every time you do your dusting and vacuuming.

My last tip has to do with heat. Because leather can dry out and crack, it is recommended that you keep your valuable leather furniture at least 2 feet from any heat sources and out of direct sunlight.

Fabric Upholstery Care

When it comes to maintaining furniture, for some reason the upholstered is often overlooked. Why? Well, I think most people feel that upholstered furniture can be difficult to maintain. This is not true, and with proper care and cleaning you will keep your upholstery in great shape for years to come.

My first tip is to vacuum your upholstery often. At least once every two weeks. Doing so will remove the abrasive soil that builds up on the surface.

My next tip is to flip and rotate your cushions. Most couch and chair cushions are made to be reversible and doing so will spread out the wear and make your furniture last much longer. Flip every two weeks when you do your vacuuming.

Here's another tip, close your blinds during the day when you are not home. This will keep out those damaging rays. Intense sunlight can cause most fabric to fade.

My last tip is a secret tip. Do you have animals? If yes, then get yourself some of those rubber dish gloves. The rubber glove will make it easy to remove hair from your upholstery. Simply put it on and rub your hand over the fabric in one direction using several passes. You will see that the hair bunches up into clumps making it easy for removal.

Wood Finish Care

Wood furniture and other specialty items such as banisters, cabinetry and mantels are often looked at as an investments and are expected to last for generations. That's why proper cleaning and care need to be used.

Basic dusting and cleaning with a mild soap like dish washing liquid or Murphy Oil Soap diluted with water are the best options for care of any of your wood finishes.
This should be all that's needed, but if you feel that your wood finishes need a bit more luster then please try this little secret.
Homemade nontoxic furniture polish:
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup white distilled vinegar
20-30 drops lemon essential oil

Shake well before using. Dip a clean, dry cloth into the polish and rub wood in the direction of the grain. Use a soft brush to work the polish into corners or tight places.

I urge you to please stay away from any silicone-based cleaning or polishing products like the majority of products sold off the shelf, because these products will only contaminate your furniture finish and over time will cause the finish to break down and become damaged. Also, avoid strong alkaline or ammonia based detergents, like window cleaners they can be harmful to some finishes. And never use scrubbing cleansers, which contain abrasives, that will only dull and even remove finish.

Need a service or have a question

Please fill in your information below.
